What is a Sherpa Blanket?

Sherpa is a material that is produced from polyester fibres, acrylic or cotton to produce a soft wool like material. It's softness and touch is similar to that of shearling (hence the name Faux Shearling). Sherpa fabrics do not use animal materials and so it's popularity has soared in last two decades. It is also very popular because of it's ability to insulate in winter months and it's very stylish presentation for a multitude of different garments.

Since Sherpa is a synthetic material, it also means it's easier to clean than a wool product. Most Sherpa blankets are machine washable, so whenever you get a slight spill or dirt on your blanket, you'll be able to wash it and keep it fresh.

Generally, Sherpa blankets are less expensive than animal made blankets, such as Merino Wool Blankets. This has made them be popular for all sorts of garments, including coats, hats and fleeces. Since the softness quality of Sherpa blankets are comparable to that of normal wool blankets, governed with the fact that animals are not involved in the product, Sherpa blankets are great consumer products and priced reasonably.

Where did Sherpa material come from?

The Sherpa fabric gets it's name from the ethnic group Sherpa people, who are native to areas in Napals, China and India. The clothing that the Sherpa people wore is similarly to that of the texture and quality of the synthetic Sherpa fabric, hence it's name. The Sherpa People wore clothing lined with thick wool, keeping them warm during the freezing temperatures of their regions and was essential to their survival.

Sherpa Fabric does have differences to that of the original Sherpa people clothing. Of course, the Sherpa people used real wool for the lining of their coats, whereas Sherpa Fabric is all synthentic. Sherpa Fabric is also a lost less thick than wool, so it doesn't insulate as well as the thick wool used by the Sherpa people.

How Its Made

Although it doesn't specifically state Sherpa material, the video below gives a great insight into how synthetic fleece is produced. This showed polyester material made from recycled bottles, knitted into long sheets of material that is dyed and then given a coating of fuzzy fleece layering to make it feel like natural virgin wool.
